CMY presents an engaging blend of multiple game genres, incorporating unique mechanics that distinguish it from traditional puzzle titles. The primary objective involves strategically placing familiar geometric shapes onto a grid, with an innovative color-mixing system reminiscent of ink blending. When a shape is positioned, the colors interact, gradually merging towards black; clearing a square occurs when colors combine into black, allowing for continued placement of new shapes. Additionally, players can rotate the grid to accommodate more blocks in various orientations, adding a layer of strategic depth.

The game supports competitive play through Game Center, enabling users to earn achievements and strive for the highest possible score. It also offers three distinct color models: one based on ink theory—cyan, magenta, and yellow combining into black; another reflecting digital color mixing—red, green, and blue blending toward white; and a traditional primary color scheme—red, yellow, and blue—familiar from educational contexts.
